Our Commitment to Occupational Health & Safety

As a successful steel fabrication company in Sydney, Hard Bakka is committed to driving a high standard of occupational health and safety (OHS) on all work sites. Subcontractors play a key role in contributing to OHS standards, and it is important all subcontractors understand their safety obligations and don’t adversely affect the health and safety of anyone else.

Subcontractors: Safety Essentials

These safe work practices are relevant to most industries subcontracted to work on a construction site.

  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE) that is appropriate for the job and fits correctly
  • Use job appropriate safety equipment, i.e. harness, scaffolding, fall protection etc, when working at heights
  • A  site safety risk assessment relevant to your trade should be conducted at the start of every job.
  • Take the necessary actions to isolate the hazard/s identified in the risk assessment to make the work area safe. If the hazard/s cannot be isolated and the work area is unsafe to commence work then don’t. Report the hazard to the job manager who will advise how to proceed.
  • Always use job-specific materials and equipment that are in good condition and that you are trained to use correctly.
  • Report any OHS incidents, accidents and/or near misses to the job manager, as soon as reasonably practical.
  • Maintain current licenses and registrations relating to your industry and current insurances.
  • Maintain an OHS system relevant to your business and the industry you work in. A good place to start is safe work Australia
  • Keep up to date with the OHS updates relevant to your industry. It is important that you understand your responsibilities in relation to OHS regarding you, any of your employees or contractors and other trades working onsite.

Steel Erection: Managing Risk

There are many risks associated with carrying out steel erection work. Some of the main hazards include:

  • Heights (falling)
  • Being hit by falling objects
  • Flying metal splinters causing an eye injury
  • Exposure to noise
  • Electrical (live wires and portable power tools)
  • Heavy loads (back injuries from lifting)

This Steel Erection Information Sheet provides advice on managing risks associated with steel erection work.

We encourage all subcontractors to make a commitment to improving health and safety on all work sites. Keeping OHS a priority will mean there is less likelihood of there being any serious workplace incidents.
